Rossnaree is situated on the south side of the river Boyne with a view of the ancient monument of Newgrange. It forms the western edge of the parish of Donore. Ros-na-Riogh translates as “Wood of the Kings”.

History of Rossnaree

It is mentioned in Irelands ancient legends and is closely associated with Cormac Mac Art. Cormac held the governance of Ireland in the latter half ot the 3rd Centuary. The exact date of his death is unknown. He is said to have prohibited the burial of his body with his pagan ancestors at Bru. his people however were derermined to carry him towards the burial grounds of Newgrange. Trying to cross the Boyne near slane was very difficult as there was no bridge, Dalton writes “The beir was whirled into the water and carried down to Ros-na-Riogh i.e. the promontory of the King, where, when discovered, the body was solemnly interred, thus giving the name to the locality”

Local Folklore

Rossnaree is also associated with the ancient band of warriors Na Fianna. It is at Rossnaree that Fionn Mac Cuhal, associated with the great legends of Na Fianna, is said to have burned his finger as a boy when cooking the Salmon of Knowledge caught on the Boyne. He sucked his finger and thus was first to taste the salmon, gaining power of second sight.
